ABI:  What life events influenced you to become an artist?

DD:  A major turning point in my life as a professional artist was due to a very serious horseback riding accident which made me realize that life is too short and precious to postpone one’s dreams.

Like many artists, I have been creative all my life, since early childhood. It feels more like art chose me, rather than me choosing art! I always gravitated towards the unique and artistic and loved anything that stimulated creativity. I experimented with a variety of media and showed my work from time to time, from youth into my 30’s after earning my degree in Fashion Design, but only as a side project.

I promised myself someday I would devote more time and energy to the creative process I truly loved and found fulfilling. After recovering from brain and spinal cord injuries sustained in my accident, my priorities became very different; I made a huge financial sacrifice and never went back to a “steady job” which to me had always felt like a betrayal of myself and my gifts. I now choose to immerse myself in my art and the things which inspire me; my animals, nature, music and all creative media, yoga and meditation, and finding love, beauty, and meaning in the simple small moments life offers.

ABI:  Why do you create?

DD:  I create to raise awareness and to participate in a collective unconscious. I believe that art is a language that speaks on a level more profound than the physical, a way to transform line, color, and shape into emotion.

At the core of my work is always a message of our spiritual connection to nature and appreciation of the many living things with which we share the Earth. As my paintings have developed from more representational images to a looser, less defined style, I have discovered that the message resonates with an even greater audience, and makes a deeper impression. It’s as if leaving something a little unsaid allows space for the viewer to become a part of the conversation.

ABI:  How are you currently selling your work?

DD:  Recently I signed with a publisher, Third & Wall Art Group, which was a big step for me. For me, multiple income streams have been vital; I have my own website, and also sell online through Fine Art America and Saatchi.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of online success I’ve experienced. I am committed to “giving back” through my artwork, and one of the most gratifying aspects of selling my work is when it is a fundraiser or benefit for one of the non-profit groups I support. I participate in the occasional festival or art walk, although I have scaled way back on those.

I appreciate every opportunity, but one little artist can’t be everywhere at once, so I have learned the importance of saying no if it isn’t a step on my personal path of where I ultimately want to be as an artist. I love doing gallery shows and currently work with a couple of galleries on an ongoing basis. Right now, I am focused on expanding the market for my original paintings by seeking additional gallery representation.
