ABI:  What influences inspire you to design jewelry, and how does that affect the techniques you use?

GG:  I live in a rural area that is packed with visual inspiration. My studio is at an altitude of 8,000 feet, so the light and air are very sharp and clear.

Steel and Rutilated Quartz Cuff: 1080 mild steel (iron), 20k fused gold, sterling silver, 22k gold, rutilated quartz

The textures of the rock cliffs on the mountains, old adobe houses, weathered barn wood, the ever-changing shape of thunderclouds, the wind on the surface of water. …. all inspire me to reproduce earthy texture in my work.

I use pieces of granite, hammers with rough striking surfaces, weathered anvils, handmade paper, and other textured metal to create exciting surfaces on my work.

Steel Neckpieces: 1080 mild steel (iron), sterling silver, 14k gold, 20k fused gold, precious gemstones

ABI:  Tell us about the collector base you’ve developed for your one-of-a-kind work.

GG:  I find it very inspiring to meet people, hear their stories, and create a special piece of jewelry just for them. My work is contemporary and somewhat unconventional, so I’ve been lucky to work for some really interesting and unique people.

Every one of my clients comes to me wanting something different than what they’ve found elsewhere. I love weaving their personal stories into my jewelry. This often turns into repeat business as other family members and friends seek out my designs, and original collectors often come back for more!

ABI:  What are some of the more unusual request and markets you’ve found?

GG:  My husband (who is also a jeweler) and I once worked on a commission together that was a locket/reliquary containing a loved one’s ashes. That was unusual!

I live in an area that is very tolerant of cultural and lifestyle differences. I have made many commitment rings for people who are not seeking the traditional wedding path. This includes same-sex couples and people of all faiths and beliefs.

The other market that I get a lot of business from is people who have inherited precious jewelry but want to use the stones and metal to create a new piece of jewelry that reflects their own personality.
